REPERTOIRE AND REQUIREMENTS

The final competition repertoire should consist of:
          60-70 minutes of music for instrumentalists and ensembles
          45-60 minutes of music for singers
PLEASE NOTE: Selections should reflect programmatic diversity (baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary) and should demonstrate the applicant’s breadth of technical and artistic abilities.

Please provide a list with the title (including movements where applicable), the composer, the duration of each work, and the overall duration of the repertoire.

IT IS EXPECTED THAT THE FINAL COMPETITION REPERTOIRE IS THE SAME AS THE REPERTOIRE SUBMITTED IN THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND THE SEMIFINAL (RECORDING) ROUND. Substitution of up to 25% (by duration) of the repertoire may be made with APS board approval.

Instrumentalists and chamber ensembles should include only complete works (all movements of multi-movement works must be performed).

Singers, pianists and guitarists must perform the entire repertoire from memory.

For strings and wind instruments, a work in which the piano is an equal partner (e.g. a sonata) need not be memorized.

Ensemble repertoire need not be memorized.

Modern or extended technique pieces also need not be memorized.

Singers should submit a balanced program of art songs and arias which demonstrate differences in style. Selections should be in at least 3 (three) languages, one of which is English.

The duration of the performance shall be 20 (twenty) minutes. The first selection may be chosen by the competitor. The judges will select additional works from the audition repertoire submitted by the competitor. It is inevitable that some works will be cut short, given the brevity of the audition, and performers should expect to quickly move to a different piece.

NOTIFICATION

Winners will be announced at the end of the day. The time of the announcement will depend on the number of competitors who are performing and will be set prior to auditions day.  All competitors are invited to be there but it is not a requirement. 

The presentation of the $3000 cash award is made to each winner at the conclusion of his or her successful performance in the 2023-2024 concert series.
