2017-2018 Winner Emma Hoeft 

Emma HoeftEmma Hoeft, the fifth child in a large musical family, started studying cello with her older brother Philip at the age of four. She has since studied with Dr. Joyce Geeting, Ben Hong of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Richard Aaron, Melissa Kraut and Richard Weiss in the Young Artist Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music, and Tanya Ell of the Cleveland Orchestra.

Emma graduated from Rice University in May 2013 with a Bachelors in Music under the tutelage of Desmond Hoebig.

Emma has won scholarships awarded by the Los Angeles Violoncello Society, the Cleveland Cello Society, National Federation of Music Clubs, and the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. Emma was the youngest winner of the 2002 International Viva Vivaldi Competition and performed with the Viva Vivaldi All Girl Orchestra and with the Washington DC Chamber Symphony in the Kennedy Center.

Emma was also invited to perform for the international public radio program "From the Top" where she performed with her sister Katrina in 2003 and with an oboe quartet in 2008. Emma was invited to play with the New West Symphony in January 2007 for its education series, “Symphonic Adventures”. In 2010, Emma soloed with the Cleveland Orchestra in their education series, performing Haydn’s cello concerto in D Major. Most recently, Emma placed 3rd in the Jeffferson Symphony Orchestra’s International Young Artist Competition and was a semi-finalist in the Schoenfeld International String Competition held in Harbin, China.

During the summers, Emma has attended the Innsbrook Music Festival and Institute, the Indiana Summer String Academy, Morningside Music Bridge Summer Festival held in Shang-Hai in 2006 and Calgary in 2007, the Aspen Music Festival on a full-ride fellowship, and the Tanglewood Music Festival.

Emma has been a member of the Colburn Chamber Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Shepherd School Symphony and Chamber Orchestras, and is a substitute cellist for the Houston Symphony and the Kansas City Symphony.
